Freeing yourself from religious bondage
Freeing yourself from religious bondage.
Reluctance to give up the so-called “Second Coming/Return” of Christ idea, doctrine, and terminology must be called for what it truly is: religious bondage. In our opinion, this area of our faith is also ripe for reform.
First, we should drop the use of this non-scriptural terminology and its unscriptural connotations of limiting Jesus’ comings to only two and rendering Him an absentee Lord and Savior. This man-made intrusion has led many astray and greatly nullified “the word of God for the sake of your tradition” (Matt. 15:6; Mark. 7:13). Secondly, we must reeducate ourselves concerning the biblical reality of his ongoing Presence and many countless comings—past, present and future.
Of course, a reformation of this magnitude, though desperately needed, is far easier said and outlined than accomplished. Blind allegiance to entrenched traditions stands in the way. It always has. However, the idea and doctrine of a “second coming/return” has got to go. It simply will not stand up to an honest, sincere, and sola Scriptura testing of Scripture, as we are commanded to do (1 Thess. 5:21).
The question then becomes, are we willing to abandon tradition when its terminology and concept have been shown to be scripturally erroneous? For many, the answer will be yes, absolutely. Others, we suspect, will kick up their heels and resist the truth of God’s Word. But the many comings of Jesus are a beautiful biblical truth and an ongoing reality in his everlasting kingdom. So let’s not be intimidated or brainwashed by the traditions of men.
The plain, simple, yet precious truth of Christ’s coming (singular) is many comings (plural). This revelation must be proclaimed in certain and Scripture-honoring terms. He has been and still is present and active in his creation. His comings are one of his ways. Let’s stop limiting his comings! He comes! Come Lord Jesus! Again, we will have much more to say on this topic in a future and forthcoming book.
