What Counts as a Coming of Jesus?

images (5)The coming of Jesus is a much more relevant, vital, and greater reality than most of us have been led to believe.

Therefore, let’s define what we mean. . . .

My working definition  for “a coming of Jesus” is this—It’s a personal and bodily intervention and/or manifestation of Jesus into the life of an individual, a group, a church, or a nation on this earth.

There are many different types of comings for different purposes, and they occur at different times and places.

Some are visible appearances; some are invisible interventions. Some are physical (seen, heard, felt); some are spiritual (an internal illumination or revelation); and some are combinations.

Theologian Henry A. Virkler calls them “a special manifestation of His presence.”

Also, there may be other types of comings of which I am not aware, if for no other reason than not everything Jesus did was written down (see John 21:25). . . .

(Above excerpted from the new book, Unraveling the End: A balanced biblical synthesis of four competing and conflicting end-time views by John Noe.)

Depending on how we count them, I have documented between 30 to 40 comings of Jesus throughout both the OT and NT. And there’s much more.

But doesn’t this listing of up to 40 possible and historical comings of Jesus give you more appreciation for why God’s Word never uses the expression “second coming” and why the Church’s doctrine of a “second coming” will not stand up to an honest, sincere, and objective test of Scripture?

But what do you think?
