Fantasy Christianity

It’s billed . . . as ‘the climax of the book of Revelation . . . . the ultimate hope—a material world in which all suffering [pain and evil] is gone [in] a new heaven and a new earth . . . . the future-perfect world.’ . . .images (59)

“Problem is, that’s not how my Bible reads. I’ve read the last page of the Bible, the page before that, and before that, and all of the Book of Revelation, including chapters 21 and 22. No removal of evil from planet Earth is ever mentioned. Even more troublesome . . . is that evil is still present on earth throughout the Bible’s last chapter. . . .

“It simply does not follow from this last chapter of the Book of Revelation (or anywhere else in the Bible) that evil is ever banished from the earth. Those who perpetuate this belief are simply indulging in wishful thinking (perhaps deception) without any biblical authority. Where am I wrong on this? If I’m not, then let’s call this misplaced hope for what it truly is, ‘fantasy Christianity.’ And the fact is that this fantasy will not hold up to an honest and sincere test of Scripture.”
